Our History
Come along as we trace our roots back to 1955 and learn what made Crane Credit Union the strong financial institution we are today.
Military Roots, Member-Focused Growth
1955
Crane U.S. Naval Depot Employees Federal Credit Union received its charter to serve employees of the Crane Naval Base, the third largest naval installation in the world by geographic area. Commanding Officer Captain Eugene Rook asked our first member, Ajax Arvin, to get the credit union off the ground. Arvin was an active member for 55 years.
1975
Missions at the Crane Base evolved, and so did the credit union’s name, dropping “U.S. Naval Depot” for the shorter and easier Crane Employees Federal Credit Union.
1991
When the credit union began extending services to communities outside the base, the board removed “employees” from the name and rechristened it Crane Federal Credit Union.
1996
CFCU’s charter was amended to allow select employee groups (SEGs) into the field of membership, and the first branch location outside Crane Base opened in Washington, IN. In the years following, CFCU added branch locations in Linton, Bedford, Bloomington, Loogootee, Plainfield and Franklin.
2007
Corporate headquarters moved from Crane Base to the WestGate at Crane Technology Park. The new location houses administrative and support staff, including the executive team, accounting, IT, asset recovery, risk management, card services, lending and the WestGate branch. CFCU continues to serve the Crane Base with a new branch structure completed in 2009.
2008
In December, CFCU merged with PSIFCU (Terre Haute division), bringing a new branch on Ohio St. to the Terre Haute community.
2015
Two more mergers ensued, the first with AA Federal Credit Union in Terre Haute and the second with Centurion Federal Credit Union in Evansville. On December 31, 2015, Crane Federal Credit Union switched from a federal to a state charter, officially becoming Crane Credit Union.
2016
Crane Credit Union added 27 counties in southern and central Indiana to its field of membership.
2020
We acquired Community State Bank of Southwestern Indiana, the first of two banks in two years.
2021
We acquired our second bank, Our Community Bank in Spencer and Cloverdale.
2022
Crane Credit Union merged with Hulman Field Technicians Federal Credit Union in Terre Haute, Indiana, paving the way for a bright future for even more members.
2025
CCU now has 18 locations across the southwestern quadrant of Indiana.
